Continuation: A Poem

Trees, and their branches
Branches, and their leaves
You, mother
You and me
You brought me into this world
I am, because you are
You brought me into this world
I am, what you are
I’m a continuation
I’m your continuation

Born from you
Born of you
You’re my harbour
You’re my home
You nurtured me
And you loved me
You held me when I was scared
You taught me what it meant to care

Born from you
Born of you
You’re my harbour
You’re my home
When the world was harsh
And people let me down
You made me strong
You taught me how to stand my ground

To me, it’s nothing short of angelic
Your grounding simplicity
Your beautiful calming voice
Those bright sparkling eyes, when you talk
The way your footsteps sound, when you walk
But mostly, I think,
It’s the lines
That your smiles draw on your cheeks
To me, it’s nothing short of angelic
With only a glance, you touch me
With only a smile, you heal me
To me, it’s nothing short of angelic

Last winters, this one cold cold evening
I remember looking at old pictures, of you and I
It dawned on me, how time is passing us by
Weeks turn into months, months into years
I grow up. I grow up, and you grow old
I think to myself, how is it fair
That I grow up
And that you grow old
I think to myself, how is it fair
For I am, because you are
And I am, what you are
So, how is it fair
That I grow up
And that you grow old
This thought
It’s stubborn, and it’s strong
It stays the day
It stays the night
This thought
It’s stubborn, and it’s strong
This thought,
It’s now, not leaving

Been almost a year now
Every time I come back home
You run towards me
You take me into your arms
Seeing you, it elates me
But seeing you, it also breaks me
It breaks me
And I utter not a word
It breaks me
And I shed not a tear
I look at things that are
And I see things that one day,
No longer will be
It’s torture
And it’s pain

I sit here
Notebook in one hand
A pen in the other
I write;
Trees, and their branches
Branches, and their leaves
You, mother
You and me
You brought me into this world
I am, because you are
You brought me into this world
I am, what you are
I’m a continuation
I’m your continuation

As I write
It finally dawns on me
I’m a continuation
I’m your continuation
Nothing ends here
Nothing ever ends
I may one day,
lose the shelter of your arms
But never that of your spirit
I may one day,
lose the shelter of your arms
But never that of your love
Love will live on
You will live on
______________________________________
You’ll live on, in me
You’ll live on, with me
Not because I look like you
Or speak like you
But because I am you
Pink flesh, thick skin, biting taste
The blood that flows inside of me, my DNA
All from you
All of you
I am, because you are
And I am, what you are
______________________________________
You’ll live in me
And I’ll live for you, mother
I’ll live for you
Everything you believed in,
I’ll believe in
Everything you stood for,
I’ll stand for
I’ll prove myself, mother
The mistakes I’ve made, I promise I’ll amend
All the efforts you put into me,
They’ll all be worth it, in the end
______________________________________
Now when I see you, mother
It elates me
Now when I see you, mother
It no longer breaks me
It’s no longer torturous
There's no longer any pain
It’s happiness and happiness alone
As it should be

Trees, and their branches
Branches, and their leaves
You, mother
You and me
You brought me into this world
I am, because you are
You brought me into this world
I am, what you are
I’m a continuation, mother
I’m your continuation
